Academic and Professional Profile
Luis M. Romero-Rodríguez, Ph.D., is Professor of Strategic Communication in the Department of Public Relations at the College of Communication, University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. He also coordinates the university’s Public Relations and Institutional Communication Research Group.
He is a tenured Professor of Strategic Communication at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain, where he is currently on leave. In 2022, he received national accreditation for appointment as Full Professor from the Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA). He also holds the distinction of Honorary Professor at Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo in Ecuador.
His work bridges research, postgraduate education, doctoral supervision, and international academic collaboration across Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. His principal areas of expertise include strategic and corporate communication, digital media, artificial intelligence, media literacy, disinformation, organisational communication, and higher education.
Education
Romero-Rodríguez holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the inter-university doctoral programme of the universities of Huelva, Seville, Málaga, and Cádiz. His doctoral dissertation received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award from the University of Huelva in 2015.
He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico and holds a Master’s degree in Social Communication from the University of Almería. He also holds postgraduate qualifications in Law and International Politics and University Teaching, as well as undergraduate degrees in Social Communication, specialising in Corporate Communication, and Law.

Research and Publications
Romero-Rodríguez has authored more than 150 scholarly publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and book chapters. His research has appeared in international journals such as Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, BMC Psychiatry, International Journal of Strategic Communication, Management Decision, Corporate Communications: An International Journal, Journal of Management Development, Corporate Governance, Journalism Practice, Media History, Media and Communication, and Journal for Cultural Research.
His research examines how communication, emerging technologies, and digital platforms influence organisations, education, public discourse, and contemporary society. A significant part of his recent work explores the implications of generative artificial intelligence, digital misinformation, media literacy, corporate reputation, and strategic communication.
He has participated in numerous nationally and internationally funded research projects and has collaborated with research teams in Spain, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and other countries. His work has also been recognised with distinctions including the 2021 Napolitan Victory Award for research addressing online hate speech and the 2020 Roblón Award for Emerging Communication Researchers.
Teaching and Academic Leadership
With two decades of university teaching experience, Romero-Rodríguez has taught undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in communication, strategic communication, digital media, corporate communication, media literacy, and research methods.
He has held teaching, research, and visiting appointments at universities in Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. His international academic activity includes doctoral supervision, postgraduate seminars, curriculum development, research leadership, and cooperation between universities.
Earlier in his career, he served as General Director of Extension and Community Services at Universidad Santa María in Venezuela. He has subsequently contributed to the development and coordination of postgraduate programmes and international academic initiatives.

International Experience and Academic Networks
Romero-Rodríguez has delivered keynote lectures and invited presentations at more than 50 international conferences and academic events in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
His international experience includes a postdoctoral fellowship at Tecnológico de Monterrey and teaching and research stays at Universidad Santiago de Cali, Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, and Universidad San Martín de Porres.
He has participated in international academic networks and research groups devoted to communication, media literacy, educational innovation, and research training, including the Euro-American Interuniversity Research Network on Media Competences for Citizenship (ALFAMED).

Editorial Experience
Romero-Rodríguez has extensive experience in scholarly publishing and editorial management. He has served as Associate Editor of Anàlisi: Quaderns de Comunicació i Cultura since 2019. Previously, he was Associate Editor of Comunicar from 2016 to 2023 and Editor-in-Chief of Retos from 2016 to 2020.
He has also served on the scientific and editorial boards of several international journals in communication and media studies and is Editor-in-Chief of the Communication Series at Editorial Sindéresis.
