sNOOC Networks for Media Literacy in Older Adults

What is it?

sNOOC (social Nano Open Online Courses) are short, specialized online learning modules designed for 20-hour training. This study analyzes their application in forming communicative networks that empower students to become e-teachers and train elderly populations in media literacy.

Why is it important?

This article explains that media literacy is essential for bridging the digital divide in aging populations. According to the research of Gil-Quintana et al., the sNOOC initiative integrates inclusive pedagogies, AI tools, and metaverse experiences to develop digital skills among seniors while fostering collaborative learning among graduate students.

Key Findings from the Study

Project Design and Goals

  • Implemented by 79 postgraduate students at UNED (Spain).

  • Focused on building e-teacher networks through the course “Virtual Scenarios for Participation”.

  • Target: develop digital literacy in seniors vulnerable to digital exclusion.

Mixed Methodology

  • Quantitative: Analysis of user interaction data on the Chamilo platform and feedback questionnaires.

  • Qualitative: Virtual ethnography and expert evaluations of 8 sNOOC courses.

What Makes sNOOC Unique?

Inclusive and Immersive

The model leverages:

  • AI-generated content

  • Immersive environments (Metaverse)

  • Universal design for learning

  • Emphasis on collaboration and peer mentoring

Measurable Impact

The main findings indicate:

  • Positive correlation between platform access and user satisfaction.

  • High engagement in discussion forums promoted solidarity and mutual support.

  • Strong interaction between personal motivation and collaborative group formation.

Real-Life Applications

sNOOC Examples

Courses designed include:

  • “Senior 3.0”

  • “Digital Literacy through Email”

  • “Healthy Seniors Network”

  • “Google & AI: Digital Companions”

These courses empowered seniors to:

  • Navigate social networks.

  • Use email and AI tools.

  • Engage safely in online communities.
